Happy Easter!

This easter I thought I'd re-create an old Slavic pagan tradition from my homeland and dye  some chicken eggs. Surprising as it may be, whilst I've seen family and friends do it I've never actually attempted it myself. But I thought it would be a bit of fun and maybe even a little healthier than eating the standard chocolate eggs. So here's what I did step by step if ever you feel like eating colourful boiled eggs or would like to make it apart of your own Easter tradition.

Step 1 - You will need: natural or artificial food dye, I was lazy so artificial it was, but you can use beetroot, or red onion skins, spinach, tumeric, and tea. If you choose to use natural dies you will need to boil your eggs along with the colour, if you are using artificial follow the steps below.

Step 2 - Take your boiled egg and place into an old stocking with whatever shape you would like on your egg, I've got some parsley and some fern leaves. Tie the stocking tight around the egg. If you choose to just have plain eggs, skip these steps and jump straight to the colouring in step 3.

Step 3 - Place 20 drops of colour, a teaspoon of vinegar in with some boiled hot water, stir and then dip the egg in. I left mine in for around 10 mins to absorb colour.

Step 4 - Take the eggs out, chop the stocking off and leave to dry with the leaves still on. When dry you can remove the leave and there should be a pattern on the egg.

Step 5 - Eggs are ready for egg cracking competitions or just peel and serve.

So Happy Easter, Srecan Uskrs, Buona Pascua to all!
